We at Singapore Club in Australia have some suggestions to help get you started.....
Cheap: (Suitable for those coming alone)
Rent a room (Price range $100 ~ $200) sometimes they charge bond around usually 2 to 4 weeks rent

Go to those asian supermarket, sometimes they have free newspapers in local language like chinese, inside got classifieds, the rooms in there usually cheaper..
Suggestion: If you are still overseas in Singapore and saw something you like, suggest you to call them up and discuss, this shows that you are really interested, and they might reserve/wait for you to arrive.
Expensive: (Boh pian if you coming with family and baby etc)
Rent a apartment.. but more troublesome, need to inspect, fill in form etc go thru agent..
The problem with this is that you can't rent unless you fill in the form and inspect the property, therefore it's quite difficult to rent from overseas.

However, the rental market in Australia esp Sydney is very tight at the moment, every one looking to rent, so don't be surprised to go to open house and see 30 other couples looking at the same apartment as you are.. and as a new migrant it's difficult to get "References" so sometimes people resort to these tricks:
- Offer to pay all 6 mths rent in advance
- Offer to pay $10 or $20 per week more than their asking price
Temporary: (Hotel / etc )

Agreed with the great tips you provided. For temporary short term stay, you can also find cheaper deal than hotel on Airbnb. I have a listing in Melbourne Ringwood if anyone is interested.
